The German government said on Sunday it was reviewing its hundreds of millions of euros of aid for Palestinians following the biggest attack on Israel in years by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Development Minister Svenja Schulze said the government had always been careful to check that the money was only used for peaceful ends.

“But these attacks on Israel mark a terrible fracture,” she said. “We will now review our entire engagement for the Palestinian territories.”

There was hope people are less easy to abuse when they suffer less, and have some education.

There’s also a humanitarian argument to be made. After all, these are humans, not everyone’s pawn.

I agree it did not work as well. On the other side, we don’t know how much worse it could have been without outside help.

I hope we’ve conclusively proven that theory to be false. Throw this on top of the theory that, as nations industrialise, they naturally democratise and become more peaceful. China has categorically proven this false.
