There seem to be many ‘sources’. Youtube have a policy where you can show explosions, you can show guns shooting as long as you can’t see the targets - it’s clearly written. Yet several people are demonetised for showing clips related to Ukraine for a start - and YouTube doesn’t respond to requests to explain, it’s a secretive policy that doesn’t follow the written policy.

It’s also very easy to find other videos which would more clearly break the actual rules as they are written. Basically, they do have an agenda - it applies to many similar channels - and they keep very quiet about real reasons for doing so, instead quoting some bullshit rule which isn’t true, and doesn’t apply, both at the same time.

    I think YouTube is dying.

Already, I see many of my favourite channels being restricted (one Ukrainian blogger) whilst the completely moronic, yet dangerous conspiracy theory/Flat-Earthers flourish.

Meanwhile, the most common thing we see is the push to sign up and pay them - yet with all the censorship (not simply censored for non-paying customers to allow the advertisements) it is not a viable option.

Thankfully I still use a Desktop - with Firefox and decent extras the actual ads are still not affecting me at all, but YouTube’s policies really are.

They are completely above the law - they don’t need to respect their own TOS (the reasons many people are blocked is more related to some secret narrative, and it goes against their own stated terms).

There is no way to appeal outside YouTube, and good luck with any idea of taking them to court for removing your income stream, or censoring a very useful source of information whilst spamming you with algorithms that treat you like Spongebob, and expect you to watch completely moronic content.

I suggest YouTube is a conspiracy to destroy the world, starting with the world population’s ability to think.

    Convince me I’m wrong ;)

  • There are a couple of things here… firstly you’re thinking about him being with someone else - that’s not just a ‘breakup’, that’s worse.

Anyway, I found relaxing to be difficult so I went out and did stuff - also I just met lots of friends and tried not to be on my own. During my last breakup, I had someone to meet every day after work for a week - and that put some distance which made it easier.

  • Also consider - don’t sign in to YouTube. Set uBlock, and Sponsorblock, too - so when youtube does get watched, the ads and promotions get skipped.

Everyone here is missing the point - by signing in to YouTube, you give Google more power to dominate your life.

With a simple inoreader extension in Firefox, you can visit a youtube/youtuber/video page and subscribe the feed.

Search interesting channels and save them to Feedly, or Inoreader.

Pin those to Firefox, so that your feeds are always refreshed and visible.

  • To begin with, I’d stop her using the YouTube website logged in.

Set her up with Inoreader - then when you find something interesting, you can visit the ‘video’ page and subscribe to the feed…

If you log her out, that will mean she just uses it without logging in - which works ok for feeds. She can browse, but it’s fresh.

Just a few suggestions that work for me - via RSS feed (not subscribed in Youtube):

    • Juicy Life
    • Sci Show
    • Simonscat
    • FailArmy
    • Daily Dose
    • Vlad Vexler
    • Big Think

With inoreader it’s a simple task to mark all items in a folder as read if you want to skip them. Also, with the inoreader account you can log in remotely at any browser, then you can find stuff you think is cool and subscribe - then that will show up in her feeds.

    Not only video/youtube.

I love this site, I found a couple of dozen and added them in pyradio app so I’ve always got interesting listening when I don’t want to stare at the screen.

  • You know that Google and Reddit own the internet - so just go there, and make sure you’re using a Chromium based browser because that’s the market share too.

That way, you can work to create a Fediverse whilst Google and friends succeed in closing all the loops to take total control of your internet and browser.

Other people will say they ‘search’.

Part of the marketing strategy is to make Microsoft, Google, Reddit etc the default.

    Why reinforce it?

The issue is becoming accessible to Search.

Not specifically to become accessible to Google.

Here’s one example of something I found OUTSIDE the fediverse via search.

I use SearXNG, but I remember that one came via Qwant search and NOT via Google.

Language IS very important here, and it’s important to avoid always using ‘default’ branded options which are not and should never be considered the default.

  • Ok, not a stupid question - but annoying to assume that only Google is relevant.

Also, annoying that you’ll assume that searching ‘instant rice’ will pull results from Lemmy. Even searching Lemmy for ‘instant rice’ brings zero results.

    • Instant rice simply had all of the good parts milled out If you really are interested, I’d skip it entirely - ‘instant’ rice is basically rice that got everything milled out of it, then it’s cooked, then dried - it costs a lot more and tastes like shit.

So I hope my answer will come up in your next search…

However, searching for ‘sending epub files to my kindle’ brings up quite a few… and down the list there, we see posts from 2022 in r/kindle, and entering reddit as an extra keyword pulls up more…

So really, we want to know if we search for something which should have results in Lemmy.ml, Lemmy.world - and not only Lemmy, there are others - like BeeHaw) how long is it going to take before this gets picked up by SEARCH ENGINES (Let’s not say Google, or Reddit - these are bad habits unless there’s a specific need to specify).> instant rice

  • It depends where you live (I’m in Bangkok, so grocery choices are quite limited).

I love Oats. I got massively back into them again this year… now I buy around 3kg every month (instant oats).

It’s only this year, really, that I discovered that oats are still really good and creamy when not made with milk… and it’s really easy to boil a single cup of water to dump on a cup of oats for a perfect breakfast (left standing for a minute - done… no need to ‘microwave’ oats).

Also, cheap staples include: carrots, potato, broccoli, spinach…

Frozen strawberries are dirt cheap here too.

    Breakfast 1:

    • Instant Oats (1 cup, 1/4 tsp salt, 3tsp sugar, 3 tsp creamer)
    • pulsed to powder in the blender with a cup of boiling water poured over.
    • Blend 100ml milk with 3 strawberries and mix that in. The beauty of this is (as my son does NOT like stodgy/thick porridge) I can add an extra 100ml of milk to his breakfast, and it becomes a liquid smoothie.

    Breakfast 2:

    • Weetbix are not too cheap, but ONE biscuit mixed with ONE cup of oats is a massive breakfast - and tastes of Weetbix… and is ridiculously cheap in comparison.

    Breakfast 3

    • Oats work great with eggs…
    • 1 cup oats, some salt, some cumin (maybe a teaspoon)
    • 2/3 cup boiling water (soak a minute)
    • 2 duck eggs mixed in
    • butter up the frying pan and dump it in there, cover and cook gently for 3 minutes, flip and give them another 3 minutes.

    DIsgusting poopy one

    • 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder mixed with 4 teaspoons of non-dairy creamer + 1 cup oats
    • pulse to powder, add a cup of hot water.

    That’s choccie heaven right there.

  • This is the way.

Reddit is so much an American business - screw that. But it’s not even doing a proper business model - screwing the stupid Yanks and giving a better deal to people who don’t feel the need to ‘pay more for quality’.

You know, I bought a HP printer which takes HP cartridges which print out (officially) 1500 pages each, and they cost the equivalent of $8 - but only outside the USA… as an answer (I think) to well organised resistance to the ‘maybe 300 pages or less’ leading to people buying modified ink-tank cartridges locally made (in Thailand).

My last cartridge (not heavily used) lasted for 5 years before being replaced… so HP gets my money with a smile.

    Reddit can go whistle.
