Isn’t a lot of science still publicly funded? iirc part of the problem is that initial and thus risky research is publicly funded but as soon as it shows promise some strange magic occurs that turns it into private intelectual property.
Not American but it seems like a good decision from a strategic point of view. It gains her some potential right wing votes but doesn’t actually require her to enact it in the same way republicans would, no wall or calling for people to be shot on sight.
Unsalted in the shell is what I was talking about, I guess its a regional thing. The UK isn’t even close to anywhere they can grow so they’re really expensive here.
Peanuts should be at the top of the chart not the bottom, those things are fucking expensive.
Of course, when the ship is sinking we should reduce its weight by removing the bottom.
We fund our militay pretty well but we we waste so much of that money on overpaying for shit from a tiny group of certified contractors who then proceed to fuck up anyway.
I feel like if we want national service just make it part of scouts… in fact the UK already has a scout summer camp thing thats basically kiddies first army training. Its just rather expensive. If instead we made it free and maybe even incentivized (Army scouts = summer camp + your first part time job?) it’d firstly be voluntary and secondly we’d have a way better recruiting pool for the actual army when people get older. The lack of commitment would also mean people maybe not interested in the army but curious can give it a try and at the very least the people who went would come back moderately fitter and able to serve in a militia in the unlikely event the UK mainland is ever invaded.
I think pretty much everything on land would be different: plant induced precipitation, river bank stabilization, carbon sequestration changing the climate and the timing/duration of ice ages and hydrocarbons being ignited by flood volcanism events. All of that would be gone, could even rearrange whole mountain ranges over time by by altering the pressure of glaciers ice on tectonic plates.
Damn right, many techno-solutions already exist and have for a while but don’t get used, usually due to bribery by the purveyors of the problem.
A lot of people under 30 feel that none of the parties represent them in the least. Personally I just suck it up and vote for whoever seems the least shitty.
On the other hand in certain applications you can replace a significant amount of programming ability with a good undertstanding of vector maths.
I dunno pandering to an already somewhat insular group is pretty much hitting the jackpot when it comes to establishing the basis of in groups and out groups.
But the UK has its own nuclear arsenal? Though I admit that fact goes both ways, nukes are kind of all or nothing so the presence of american nukes makes the situation neither better nor worse in regards to the general presence of nukes. Though in the event of launch I supposed it could lead to a situation where the US launches but the UK doesn’t but the launch location causes the UK to tank a retaliatory strike that was incited by the US.
I planted a tree 19 years ago! so close!
I think that’s kind of the point though, we could meet space traveling aliens and deem them non sapient beings without emotions using the same logic we apply to animals because there’s no empirical way to prove that any creature isn’t just the sapience equivelent of a chinese room.
I guess the difference is you have a right to smoke, the 6 people sitting next to you have 6 rights not to. Maybe that was the consideration at the time?
Being effectively conquered twice before being made to scede some of their land for a century while a foreign power floods the country with drugs?
British media likes to undersell any and all protests, they typically take their photos at the end when there’s a much lower number of people and then knock at least half off the number of people who attended. Oh and if one person brings a joke flag/banner then you better believe pictures of that from different angles will be all over the place rather than any pictures of actual protestors.
To be fair those single points are important, they’ve led to things like nuclear energy and modern computers… come to think of it a lot of our modern technology is rather like the physics equivelent of exploiting an extreme edge case in a game physics engine.
