  • Diamonds actually get their value because a single entity (DeBeers) owns something like 80% of all diamonds in the market.

They dictate the price by throttling supply and naming a price. People are willing to pay as a flex but you are right in that DeBeers markets “real” diamonds and “lab grown”.

It’s mostly done to capture different market segments, and to keep up the value of their stockpile of nearly unlimited diamonds already mined by people who are essentially slaves.

That being said, if there was a market for diamonds soaking in vials of oppressed orphan blood (with provenance of course) DeBeers would absolutely sell it.

If lab grown diamonds became significantly cheaper than slave mined diamonds, DeBeers would still likely keep their mines open to maintain control of the market. Even if they successfully moved consumers on to lab diamonds - can’t have someone else get diamond market share.

  • I’m not well versed in what is happening at specific campuses across the US - but if people not associated with the school (anyone not current students/Alumni) are protesting on Private property, the school is well within their rights to have trespassers removed.

Students should be allowed to peacefully protest on school grounds, or they can join non students protest that is off campus.

I’m not sure what the answer to Israel//Palestine is, but the US is absolutely directly funding and assisting in a genocide while publicly almost maybe finger wagging Netanyahu.

I would love to see North Americans actually tuck in to protest and figure out how to actually make them work. There’s so much that needs to change but never will until actual consequences come for those responsible.

  • Big fan of 50:50 water and grocery store white vinegar with a tiny drop of dish soap.

For glass I’ll also add a little rubbing alcohol to the above, for heavier grease or spots on glass I’ll just use 70% rubbing alcohol

Bathrooms can have a ton of different surfaces, I’ve had great success with VIM bathroom and kitchen but I’m sure anything branded for kitchen/bathroom will handle sink/shower/tub/toilet well.

CLR for anything involving (Calcium, Lime, Rust) tougher sediment buildup.

I get sponges that basically look and feel like the rough part of Velcro and are thin for a sponge, like the green scrubby rectangles, but superior imo.

When they’re getting tired they become my household cleaning sponge and work great! A decent sized brush can be handy, and definitely rags/paper towels for wiping things dry if necessary.

Squeegees are fun, not particularly handy for bathroom cleaning unless there’s a lot of tile/tempered glass/mirrors or you like using it to wipe down the shower when you’re finished

  • I made a similar comment to another thread, but I’ve been having login issues and I don’t think it posted.

I’m not sure if it’s being able to compare apples to Oranges with Lemmy, and I was very aware that the quality of reddit was lower than when I joined in like 2010. But Holy Cow is it ever bad at Reddit.

RIF is still working for me, I’m logged out and never vote or comment on Reddit anymore. But I still pop in to view local news and subreddits that don’t have the same traction here yet.

The current Reddit experience is terrible. All the comments feel like opinion wedge bots stating divisive opinions that aren’t engaging with anyone.

All the top/best sorted comments are a few minutes old and largely irrelevant. Seems like reddit is pushing bot/chat GPT content to replace migration users.

I’d rather be on a buggy platform, talking to real people, who disagree or not, are engaging in real discussion.

Going to reddit when I’ve crushed through most hot topics on Lemmy really drives home what makes a social platform good, and what makes a social platform bad.

Hopefully Reddit doesn’t fully migrate here and it can serve it’s new purpose of being a social cesspool trap for special interest bots.

Getting the same news from Lemmy has provided a comparison that allowed me to see exactly how toxic Reddit currently is.
