  • Jury nullification isn’t a real thing. It’s not a law in any country, it’s a “loophole” that springs out from some simple concepts.

    1. You have a right to a trial by a jury of your peers, jurors are protected from consequences related to their deliberation and decisions.
    2. If found “not guilty” the state cannot retry you for the same crime.

Both of those things are important to avoid tyranny in the judicial system.

What that means is that if, for any reason, the jury decides to find you “not guilty” even against their “jury instructions” or the law itself, you’re off the hook forever. This concept is called “jury nullification” but it’s not a law or “feature” of the justice system. In fact most of the time it’s been used for very unjust outcomes, for example juries often refused to find people who perpetrated lynchings guilty because a “jury of your peers” in many states was racist AF!

That being said I LOVE to see it used to refuse unjust laws!

  • It’s never throwing your ballot in the garbage though. I used to think the same way, but every vote on the left, even if for the lesser evil, even if they lose, moves the conversation to the left. When we all stay home you get maga nutjobs stealing the show running unchecked.

Last thing is that gerrymandered states are the EASIEST to upset by increasing voter turnout. To gerrymander effectively you have to put your opponent in dense areas they’ll win by a large margin, then spread your side so that you barely win the rest of the districts. That means that a 5% increase in votes on the left can take you from a loss to a nearly complete victory in a gerrymandered state.

Vote splitting on the other hand is a trickier beast, but in the end if all the left votes go to a moderate then that gives the left a lot of leverage because if the moderate candidate doesn’t bend to the left then they’ll lose the next election.

    Always vote.

  • Sorry I was just watching a video that was explaining that most companies are run by a handful of people who basically each represent several of the largest shareholders combined. I suppose I was imagining these people making the actual decisions and hiring the board and pushing the direction of the company and the lobbying efforts as the “investors”.

You’re right I don’t mean we should commit war crimes against grandpa because he has a pension fund lol

  • That’s the problem with investors, if they’re not making more money than last year they find a way to fuck the rest of us. Either they pressure companies to lay off workers, they pressure the government to cut taxes, lower pesky labour and environmental regulations, or just handover cash in the form of a subsidy or bailout.

Either way they get our money somehow and enshittify our lives. If there’s no hell we’ll need to invent a special kind of justice for these people.

  • You start off strong then move straight to supporting the fucking Taliban, as if that’s a reasonable position to take.

I agree, the article is likely highly sensationalized, but let’s be clear the Taliban are a piece of shit government with extremely regressive and repressive views. Maybe this shit doesn’t happen in Kabul, but Kabul seems bad enough that women can only show their faces and most are even too afraid to do that. That shows you that it’s a TERRIBLE place to start with even in the best places. Unfortunately many people don’t live in Kabul and it seems that the government isn’t going to do anything to stop regional authorities from abusing their power and any young woman they can get their hands on.

Don’t travel to Afghanistan. Every dollar that goes to Afghanistan supports religious oppression.

  • The base means how high you can count using only one digit. In base ten you have 0-9. In base one thousand, 0-999 are all represented as a single digit (you’d need a massive numerical system). Let’s say that w is the number for 998, and x is the character for 999. You’d count 0, 1, 2, 3…w, x then the next number (one thousand) would be 10. 11 is one thousand and one and so on all the way to one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine which would be 1x, then two thousand would be 20.

The base is just how high you can count before you need a second digit. In base 2 you can only count 0 and 1 before you need another digit. That’s why two is written “10” in base two.

  • LMAO… ‘Despite’ the devastation…

That’s like if your dog bit the neighbour, but then the neighbor killed your whole family and burned your house down and a journalist said “despite the loss of of everything he owned and everyone he loves, he now says he was happy his dog at least got one in first”

What kind of degenerate reporting uses obvious normal human reactions to tragedy to score political points and dehumanize innocent civilians.
