  • Because the Republicans, with their allies in the Federalist Society, have been planning this for decades.

Because the US Constitution excludes the most representative institution (the House of Representatives) from the appointments process. The President (determined by the Electoral college, which gives disproportionate weight to low-population red states) nominates justices, who are then confirmed by the Senate (where low-population red states have disproportionate power).

And here we are. Where the conservative supermajority in the USSC exists because two presidents who lost the popular vote have nominated justices who were then confirmed by a legislative body representing a minority of Americans.

  • Agreed. I’m old enough to remember when you could have a rational debate with conservatives on a foreign policy question or government budget priorities or economic policy. But how do you argue with someone who believes that millions of illegal votes were cast in 2020 or that Jews secretly control the world financial system or that white people are the real victims of racism?

You can’t argue with someone who lives in a different reality than you do because there are no common points of reference. It’s the most insidious effect of over-exposure to conservative media and I have no idea how people can be deprogrammed.

  • Aside from the social issues mentioned by Jim, if you’re looking to move somewhere on the I-5 corridor be aware that Oregon’s reputation for ceaseless rain is, in some ways, well-deserved. Fall through spring is very cloudy and rainy. It gets gloomy and if you suffer from SAD it can be hard on you. On the other hand, summers are beautiful, with mostly sunny and warm days with the occasional heat spell.

Being a fairly large state with varied terrain, there are several climate zones:

    • Summers are hotter on the I-5 corridor south of Eugene.
    • The coast is cool and cloudy year-round, and rainier than the I-5 corridor.
    • Areas east of the Cascade Mountains are much drier, with hotter summers and cold winters.
