Even if they do go through with that and become bloated, doesn’t that just mean the fediverse’s userbase will be back where we started? Mastodon’s ceo/founder seems to agree
Doesn’t bother me much honestly, I’d rather be able to follow some of my favourite artists on Threads from the comfort of Mastodon/Lemmy, even if that’s only until Threads goes downhill.
Certainly the biggest con for me.
The exploration and combat are pretty darn good, but the most effective way to progress in that game is to do the same shit over and over again every single day.
I will say though, I had a great experience for about 60 hours in the beginning thanks to the great world design and some 50 more good hours sprinkled throughout the rest.
Mastodon already exists, they didn’t need to bother
Genshin Impact. Had like 400 hours in it before quitting.
I’m glad I’m out of that grind hell now.

That’s another thing. People need to stop recommending the massive servers and recommend smaller ones like vlemmy.net, lemmy.one or lemm.ee instead, at lest until lemmy’soptimized for user counts of this scale. Those servers have also been upgraded for the surge of users after all, and everything’s connected anyway.
In fact, I think lemmy clients should go as far as to assign new users randomly to good general servers like these upon registration so they don’t even have to know about instances; would make the onboarding much better
This seriously needs to implemented in lemmy already. Not being able to see the true member count/activity of all communities is a massive blow to discoverability and very anti-ux, and likely the biggest hurdle for newcomers.
All that matters is you shouldn’t recommend the already massive overloaded servers like lemmy.world when lemmy isn’t even optimized for this sort of traffic on a single server yet, and those large servers are having issues because of it. The entire point of decentralization is to spread out and still be connected.
Recommend smaller general servers that have been up for years and also upgraded for the surge of users, like lemmy.one, lemm.ee, or vlemmy.net

That’s why it’s important to make sure they’re good general instances that aren’t defederating everything else. Beehaw seems to be an exception in this regard.
Beehaw’s essentially walling itself off from other instances, and I think the vast majority of users would rather stay on the other instances’ side rather than one that seems to be staying small on purpose.
Instance migration is already a highly requested feature, and is a thing in Mastodon already. That will fix most remaining concern about being locked out of communities when implemented.
I feel the massive onboarding advantage of users not requiring instance knowledge by doing this vastly outweighs the few users who might not find some communities they like, most of which have alternatives in other instances anyway. And they could always just make another account until instance migration is in lemmy.
Good read. Onboarding and discoverability are the weakest part of the fediverse and need to be a high priority.
Apps should go as far as assigning new users randomly to a good general instance (vlemmy.net, lemmy.one, lemm.ee etc) if it means the user wouldn’t have to know about instances, and integrating lemmyverse.net’s functionality into lemmy would both go a long way for both I feel.
