  • It’s good you have a good one, but the big issue with them is they have almost no oversight at all. They almost function as little privately owned fiefdoms with extremely broad powers over anyone under them. Yours might be good now, but there have been plenty of examples of a good HOA being bought by a corporation and then becoming tyrannical almost overnight. There’s a whole industry of HOA management companies out there, and they are bad news. The last time I saw the statistic something like 80% of new construction in the US is managed by an HOA, too.

Don’t get me wrong, when they work right they serve a purpose, but the lack of laws and oversight of them is pretty scary when you look into it.

  • While I agree that tech is desperately needed to make emojis show up consistently between sender and receiver, it’s also a bit ridiculous to claim that only using words is clearer than having an emoji in the message. Many emojis have pretty established meanings at this point or are so unambiguous across the emoji fonts out there that it provides a consistent mood. For example, putting a smile after something is no more ambiguous than :)

You may not personally understand a lot of them, but it’s not true to say they don’t hold specific meaning in many cases these days. Personally I feel they are a big improvement over just text, and help to clarify the mood behind the words as OP says. They can also provide a lot of entertainment when used well.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

  • There are some I read, mostly from small local businesses I’m rooting for.

The really big corporate ones I don’t know, though. I skip those too.

I can tell you from personal experience learning about email marketing that it’s considered one of the most effective marketing tools out there, so yes it definitely works. It’s a percentages game, though. You send out 100,000 emails and maybe you get 1-2% click through. That’s still 1k-2k people who went to your website who wouldn’t have without it, all with very minimal cost to the business.
