Yeah, I graduated with my BS in zoology over 20yrs ago and my professors wouldn’t have talked about genetics as a blueprint even back then. When I first read your comment I wanted to say that managing with these units isn’t really all that difficult. But, then I remembered that I have a magnet on my fridge that converts teaspoons to cups to quarts etc. I don’t know anyone who keeps that info in memory. Doubling or halving an American recipe can be an exciting math project

It’s fun to see what metric conversions an American has memorized. If a person can quickly convert miles to Kilometers, they are probably a runner. If you ask a group of colleagues how many grams are in an ounce, the dude who quickly say “28.3 give or take” is a pothead.

Studying evolutionary biology in my undergrad had a big impact on how I look at systems. Judge them by their effect, and not their parsimony. If the mess inside starts to negatively impact efficacy, it will almost always get replaced and almost never get fixed.

In general the green left has a hatred toward things called carbon capture. It has been a buzzword used to try and avoid renewable energy investment. It deserves some of the hate. BUT, the truth is we will need to pull a bunch of co2 out of the atmosphere to stave off the worst effects of century and a half of fossil fuel use.

It is time to stop protesting this stuff. Renewable energy is finally getting on track and we HAVE to deal with historical emissions at some point. The time is now.

We could honestly be seeing peak carbon in the next few years. The climate will change, probably already has, but we might actually survive this.

Engaging groups like Hamas, isis, or other groups that are highly integrated into the civilian population is ugly business. Hamas is not a conventional state actor with military assets on bases or mobilized for action. It’s uncles and sons and brothers in the homes of family.

The carnage in Gaza is horrifying, but Hamas isn’t likely to form lines and face the IDF in honorable field combat.

Removing the threat posed by Hamas will have an absolutely horrific cost in civilian lives. After oct 7, “the world” seems to agree that Israel has some right to remove that threat. Hamas leadership crossed a line, and like all war the cost will primarily be paid by the ordinary people who were unlucky enough to be born in the war zone.

This take seems really counterintuitive to me, but I’m no expert in Israeli politics I guess. Seems like you could use 9/11 as an analog though. In that case, the people bent over backwards to make sure that the bush administration had all the support they could ever want. Huge wins for the GOP in the 02 elections, fairly straight path to reelection in 04. It was fully five years later in 06 when voters finally started to sour on Bush and the Neoconservative project.
