  • DO whatever makes you feel better is not bad advice. Some of these studies have overarching trends that I do believe - caffeine and Adderall are protective to your brain, a little bit of speed keeps the brain healthy.

Alcohol and Benadryl are risky over time, so a habit of downers is detrimental to the brain over time.

Logically this makes sense. I think to some extent it’s just metabolism/weight, staying lean is healthier all round but there does seem to be a pattern of results showing a habit of doing a little bit of stimulants is good for you.

  • Yes!

The burrito shop near us has this insanely spicy, insanely delicious red sauce, if I have that I am making food simply as a platform for it, until it is gone. It’s so good.

Pork fu when I notice it I will make extra rice just so I can have leftover rice with egg, chili paste, pork fu.

Not steak sauce, and I am not swayed by Sriracha, but yes some condiments will dominate my food for awhile because when I eat them once I want them again.

  • At work, at the gym, at the coffee shop, at the library. At yoga, at the beach, Pokemon go raid hour. Mostly at work, but I’m older than you and that’s where I meet people and have made friends as an adult.

Not all hobbies require money, that’s an odd take. I do think it’s harder to meet people when you don’t have a family though, that part is true, connections are made through other people so it’s more work to build a network if you are just one person.

Great age to meet men, though, if you are looking for that - don’t worry about your weight, plenty of guys either like a plush build or don’t care. You will do fine in that regard if you are looking.

  • Yes. I’d always used whatever brand all purpose unbleached flour for the starter and figured it didn’t matter. So I always asked for “Gold Medal Bread Flour and whatever brand all purpose unbleached flour”. But the Publix brand all purpose unbleached wrecked my starter. It took almost the whole bag before I figured out it was the flour, because I didn’t realize they varied.

It’s actually quite good for pancakes. Maybe it’s good for biscuits, that would actually make sense. But it’s no good for bread; but Gold Medal or King Arthur unbleached all purpose work fine.

  • Agree on spices, bulk and into the freezer. Cheap spices aren’t just as good, they are better.

I used to agree on flour, got good bread flour but recently husband brought me store brand unbleached white flour and it near killed my sourdough starter, so my mind is changed on that - I’d still use it for cake, but cheap flour is low protein and won’t work for everything.

Disagree on pasta too, good pasta is easier to cook, doesn’t turn to mush as easily.

  • I wear merino wool socks. They don’t stink but I change them each day, generally speaking. Wear in day, take off to shower and sleep, new pair in mornings. I bought 10 pair, wash clothes weekly and wanted enough to not worry. But if you hand wash them you can manage it with fewer pairs.

Loose fitted merino stuff doesn’t need to be washed often, and sweaters I can wash once or twice a year since they are outerwear but socks are like underwear, sit tight on your skin and better to keep them clean.

  • I think the enshitification of the Internet was sort of just what happens to everything once it gets monetized. It was already happening before COVID.

On the other hand - when I was growing up, my city was rough. So much violent crime, bands would not come here, it was notorious. Now? No. Violet crime has decreased sharply, my kids grew up in a different world than I did.

Jobs haven’t become less secure, or at least not in my experience, that change happened in the 1980s, and it’s been about the same since.

Everyone is broke because of Ronald Reagan, for lack of a better way to explain it. Deregulation. Workers have gotten ever more productive without getting their cut of that increase in productivity and this is the endgame of that trend.

  • Oh my goodness. I am pretty much garden variety white, fair skin, blue eyes, dark hair, but mom’s dad was half native American or Mexican (such a brutal upbringing he never talked about them so she didn’t know for sure beyond “Oklahoma”), she looked more native in features, I got some of that and what I got asked down here when young is “what are you?”

It may be your accent but maybe it’s your looks. I think just responding, “Canada, what about you?” is correct.

As to why people care, I don’t rightly know. Maybe they think you might like to talk about it, or like to put people in boxes or don’t know you and are trying awkwardly to make small talk.

  • No. If you want to rescue them for soup, peel them, boil the shells in water with half an onion, a stalk of celery if you have it, to make a quick broth, throw out the shells and veg and keep the liquid.

Then put some butter in the pan, melt it, whisk in some flour. Once it’s combined and a thick paste, slowly add back in the broth, whisking to keep it smooth . Then put in your overcooked shrimp till warmed, take it off the heat and add some cream and season with salt and pepper. Simple shrimp soup.

But no, it’s not as simple as pureeing shrimp in the blender. That won’t give you anything edible.

  • Having kids made me go back to college and get a better job (pell grant covered cost back then as we were poor as fuck). So that was probably #1. Without kids I would not have bothered so even though they are expensive it’s been a net benefit bigger than any other single factor.

Leaving my deadbeat ex is a close second, though. Getting into a more functional relationship with someone who can and does hold down a job.
