If you step outside the US you might find out we’re not viewed as leading.

Threatening? Manipulative? Maybe even petulant? Sure. But leading by fear first, everything else after. Now we add fear of our instability to the mix alongside with the normal fear of economics or bombs.

The only people saying we’re a leading nation are the ones wanting you to feel good and/or ignore all the bullshit we do inside and out. The ones that yell “leading” or “greatest” the loudest are the ones fucking us over the hardest.

I don’t know if there’s a “best” amongst these. They each do a job, but they turn up different results. “Best” is the one that lets me avoid Google or Bing. Sometimes I’m forced back to Google, but that’s getting rarer.

Dunno. I still think Lemmy is better by quite a bit. I still participate I reddit occasionally, and I think it’s become far less engaging as a place of discussion. It’s just the same old reposts and tired old comments over and over. It’s rarer to find insightful comment chains.

Lemmy is starting to attract some of the Reddit tropes. Dumb sex questions in asklemmy or any of the other retreads that we’ve all seen a score of times. But as far as discussions go, if one can get into one, they’re good.

Trump likes Russia, the Dems are helping Ukraine, and the people who get bombed in the Middle East dress funny and have brown skin.

China is already essentially an authoritarian dictatorship. There’s no big leap to fascism for them, they just need to fetishize the military and act more nationalistic than they already do. They’re already prejudicial, blaming minorities within for all sorts of problems, attempting to control speech and thought, etc.

That’s not how it works in many places, and even here in the US. You absolutely can be detained and charged yet later exonerated. Some places when you kill someone you are by default charged with murder because you killed someone, your personal feelings don’t determine the laws elsewhere. The public doesn’t determine whether or not someone gets arrested, and yeah, if someone gets killed I expect the cops to hold the killer for a while to figure out what happened.

Amazing arc, like watching the last 120 years in the US compressed down to a couple decades. From rural to industrial powerhouse to the kids going “fuck this shit”.

Think how many stories of minorities getting serious abuse, fear, or even just killed. Those stories become the infamous “Talk” some PoC parents have to have with their kids about interaction with the police. It’s generational. They’d know the chance of being shot is real.
