The problem with that remains: who decides what is and isn’t allowed? The government? This idea seems great until it falls in the hands of say, a government led by Trump.

It’s easy to gamble when you are comfortable. It’s not so easy for the vast swathes of people trump views as undesirable when their rights and way of life is endangered (non-cis people, non-hetero people and women to name the first that come to mind). This is exactly why it’s such a gamble and I agree with you that at this time idealism, while commendable and something I agree with, is in practice a luxury.
At first glance I read this as “defecation” and in my mind it’s all such a shitshow that it didn’t even register as exceptionally odd that the shitshow might’ve turned literal.
I think you’re conflating commerce with capitalism. I don’t think you could have communism without commerce. Even if you did away with currency and the rubber farmer is paid with grain and other foodstuffs that would still be commerce.
and less enjoyable to walk.
Which, incidentally, is great for car manufacturers!
If the place is packed it still wouldn’t change anything for the business. It’s not like OP’s spot at the table would be occupied by a random patron, it’d be an empty chair at the table that OP’s friends are sitting at. But yeah I can’t imagine being that frugal and still going to bars. I would either invite everybody to go some place free (the park when it’s nice out, my place if it’s close enough) or indeed just buy a drink every now and then.
The subject is US news. The government isn’t communist and there’s no indication that it will be any time soon. If there was to be a great firewall of any kind then it’s obvious that the government is going to be the one to control it. My point was that that’s a problem.
