Nah, too old, poor, and bad tempered. Plus I’ve already moved to a new continent twice, which is enough. And my kids would kick up all kinds of stink. But if we go the way of the states it’s going to be tough living out my normal life resisting the urge to punch a lot of people in the face.

So do I. Polling for the upcoming federal election is very concerning right now. Our right wing isn’t shy about their admiration for trump and it seems like the average Australian isn’t learning anything from what’s going on in the US right now.

I moved to the states in 2005. Got married, had kids, bought a house. Moved my family back to Australia in 2015. Had our difficulties since coming back here and often wondered if it was the right thing, but zero doubts since last November. Even my red blooded American wife says she’ll never set foot on US soil again and is going to apply for Australian citizenship.

I feel bad for decent Americans and every day appreciate how lucky I am that myself and my teenage daughters aren’t stuck in that collapsing empire.

I think this goes a bit beyond a unitary presidency. He’s not just assuming control of the executive, but supposedly independent regulators as well.

This could turn out to be the most significant moment in a presidency full of disastrously significant moments. Of course the courts will tell trump he can’t do this, but if he doesn’t listen and nobody stops him, the US is officially a dictatorship.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but trump never once said he’d only go after immigrants with criminal records. He was always going to go for all of them.

The left in the US needed to do something similar to redmap, basically take over the party from the ground up. Field leftist candidates in every position at every level. School boards, dog catchers, literally everything all the way up to president. maga started this decades ago, and it’s why they have so many people in influential positions now. The left got outsmarted, outmanoeuvred, and beaten to the punch. And it’s quite likely too late for them to do anything about it politically as the US political system doesn’t look like it’s going to survive much longer.

Buying property in the middle of nowhere is genx shit. I’d have to go 4 hours outside of nowhere before land prices started becoming realistically affordable, but I’m one of those entitled millenials who expects to live somewhere where I can also have a job.

It’s just another one of the millions of little ways Americans get screwed. I lived in the US for quite a few years and it was a shitshow. Here in Australia, the government provides a portal for filing your taxes (and pretty much all government services - just a single portal). All your info is pre-filled, you just add any additional undeclared income or deductions you want and submit. Unless you’re dealing with millions of dollars, the whole process takes 10 minutes.

If it’s the only one available for use, and everyone has to pay musk to use it. You’re not thinking like an oligarch!
