  • Quantum mechanics works, no doubt about it. What I seriously doubt is the interpretation of what it means. When you get right down to it, it’s just our best most successful attempt to model physical systems we can’t observe with enough detail to tell exactly what’s happening. The whole uncertainty principle isn’t some magic truth about the nature of reality, it’s just a statement about measuring particles by bumping them with other particles. Wave particle duality is an interpretation of the math, it isn’t required for the math to work. Bell “disproved” hidden variable theories and we’ve been working with our hands tied behind our backs ever since, just so we can preserve the comforting fiction that have free will or that it means anything in the first place. It honestly pisses me off because so many scientists just accept the Copenhagen interpretation as truth, to the point that it’s become dogma and anyone suggesting otherwise is automatically wrong. It’s no wonder particle physics has hardly made any progress in the last few decades.

  • In my experience this most often comes from a failure to perform routine maintenance, and Windows being a bloated rotting whale, decaying on the beach, slowly expanding and spreading its horrid filth across the entire system. Give your computer a new life by cleaning out all the dust, reapplying thermal paste to the CPU, oiling fan bearings, and installing a lightweight Linux distro, or at least a fresh whale carcass (clean windows install).

  • What you don’t see is the hundreds of people and countless hours of work that went into stuff like this. None of it is one person just showing up and making it happen. Everyone has their specific skill set and role in the project, no one knows everything. We see the result, but the day to day of this work would look mind numbingly boring to most people. It’s not about geniuses having inspiration strike and figuring out something amazing, it’s about months and years of staring at spreadsheets, analyzing data, fixing your mistakes, double checking, running the test again. It’s about not giving up not being wicked smart, though the people working on it are definitely smart. Also this is the expected result. We were sure it fell down not up already, this was a confirmation of that.
