A unifed global language is one of the characteristics of a type 1 civilization and right now English happens to be in a position to become that language. But whether or not English is the optimal option is a whole different can of worms. Since language and culture are so intertwined, the idea of the cultures, beliefs, and “mindsets” of entire groups of people being slowly erased, dominated, and assimilated by the anglosphere mind is a concerning long term problem. You lose out on potentially beautiful things only people of that culture and “mind” are capable of creating/conceiving or nurturing. Also America’s dominance of cultural exports is insane.

Tbh for me the third party client thing was just the cherry on top of the constant barrage of corpo fuckery in general, plus the knowledge of reddit’s IPO and inevitable decline with the way things were headed for a while.

I’m already balls deep in FOSS and started dipping my toes into the fediverse as a whole, so switching off Reddit for me didn’t hurt in the slightest. It felt good. All spez did was give me the reason I was looking for to finally pull the trigger.

Just do what you’re told and buy more. Don’t ask questions don’t think just browse TikTok, improve your social credit score, and imprint more ads into your psyche until WW3.

Spotify. I’ve wanted to use Funkwhale since it’s self-hosted and federated but I couldn’t give up all that Spotify offers.

Signal. I refuse to use whatsapp even though that’s what most people I know use.

On Masotdon, likes don’t do anything to extend the reach of a post or make it popular in an algorithm like Twitter. It’s literally just a regular like/favorite button, so use it if you want to like/favorite a post.

Reddit showed their hand and I’m just done with all these corpos. Reddit is my last hold out and I’m slowly leaving that too. I’m moving to the decentralized FOSS future that I believe in where we the people have the power.
