There were tons of options with multiple HTML elements with a sequence of CSS properties to reliably provide vertical centering (and also use vertical space at the same time) back in the days.

Now, between flex and grid (mainly flex for me, I find them more convenient) all the HTML scaffolding we used to make this work can be removed to get the same result. That’s what I mean with “no trick”.

Did you do anything to your system? I have a Win10Pro, but the first step after installation is to disable a ton of stuff, uninstall and delete a ton of applications, etc. making a lot of that alien to me too.

I remember when these were introduced on cigarette packs. For a while there was a trend of “collecting all the pics”, while other found a nice business in selling “cigarette pack holder” that would just mask the pictures. I’m not sure any of that was the initial goal.
