I had to look this up. The inventor never trademarked the name and it was used by a competitor almost immediately. He lost a lawsuit over linoleum becoming a generic term 14 years after it’s invention. There were other brand names but linoleum became a generic term almost as soon as the product was widespread.

It is not even semi-private. It is a completely public medium and absolutely nothing posted on it, including direct messages, can be seen as even remotely secure. Worse, anything you post on Mastodon is, once sent, for all intents and purposes completely irrevocable.

This guy is either actively trying to spread fear and doubt about decentralized services, or is somehow only now understanding what the internet is and how it works. Did I step into some kind of time vortex a while back and end up in a world where people ever believed that anything on the internet was private or revocable?

I’m confident that “mailing lists” are not a thing most people will know about or understand today, and for a lot of people “email” and “gmail” are completely synonymous terms. A lot of people will have never interacted with an @yahoo account, I wasn’t aware they were even still in business.

I enjoy the opportunity to try to navigate by landmarks, roadsigns, and other natural means of finding your way. Games like Skyrim are great for this, games like Mass Effect are understandably not. Unfortunately I am more of a sci-fi guy so I’m used to being railroaded through steel corridors anyway.

Nope. I only look at places I’ve subscribed to, and I’ve gone out of my way to track down places that relate to my interests across multiple instances. It’s not the most lively, but very little of it focuses on reddit.

Though you’re right, the stuff with twitter, and also youtube, have been major news topics. It’s to be expected from major internet resources shooting themselves in the foot.

Yeah, those are very good concerns, and in his position (I understand the instance is named after it’s admin), I would be wary. But he pays the operating costs and he opens himself to liability, which means the decision is his to make. I can only say it’s the one instance I know of that seems to be leaning into the spirit of self-determination through self-hosting.

Oh I have no doubt it must have been a step forward in the development of hydraulics in transmissions, you need only look at the black magic box that is modern slush-automatics to see that. Unfortunately my knowledge of anything I haven’t worked on myself (and that’s a very, very limited window of experience) comes down largely to pop-culture and meme content. I’m fairly certain Regular Car Reviews discussed a car with that transmission and what you get is more of a piss-take than a true walk through the operating principles.

I don’t personally see this is a problem. I don’t think I understand how mastodon-format content can make any sense in the sea of posts with multi-threaded comments sections attached to specific communities.

Same for any other site that does this and offers a “Premium service” to fix the problem that they, themselves, created. There are ways to have safe ads, and fair user experience even with them in play.

The bottom line is that I decide what content is received, interpreted, and rendered by my hardware. Youtube can kick and scream all they want, the nature of the internet is not in their favor. I prefer to directly support creators I follow, when and where I can.
