I’d say ffmpeg is a good example, it’s used by almost every piece of software that has to manipulate audio or video (including messaging applications), yet not many people know about its existance.

I tried using VS Code but the fact that it’s not fully open source (VSCodium has limitations) bothers me a lot, as does the presence of telemetry.
I like some of the convenience features, like having a file picker when you’re writing paths, my students use it a lot, but I’m sticking with Kate.
People think I can hack anything ever created, from some niche 90s CD software to online services
I didn’t know these existed, I’ll see if I can find one. Thanks!
I use 4-5 because I have acid reflux 🤦♂️
It gets better bro.
I’m 33 and I was in a worse situation:
I’m italian and I’m absolutely ashamed to say that I use an italian ISO keyboard for programming. It’s missing some symbols like the backtick but I can’t get used to US ANSI so I just configured some macros to type the missing characters.
Restore the screen resolution when an old game crashes
What is this?
Power Francers - Pompo nelle Casse
It’s a very stupid song with lyrics that make no sense and are kinda hedonistic, and I hated it when it came out in 2010 because I felt that it somehow “promoted” that lifestyle, but it eventually grew on me and it brings me back to simpler times, now I get the irony of that song.
I got it in May 2022 after going to the dentist. Symptoms came after 2 days, similar to a cold. I just took something for the fever and I was back in action in about 2 days. The flu I got last year was way worse than covid.
I like wearing my wetsuit when I’m alone, sometimes I even sleep in it. I like the look and feel of neoprene.
I’d say I’m above average but not a genius, IQ professionally tested at 117.
I have decent logic skills, spatial awareness, but I really think I lack social skills, I have a very hard time picking up social cues and that kind of stuff. That’s something an IQ test can’t measure and it’s my weakest spot.
In 2018, I had an infection and I basically couldn’t eat or drink almost anything without throwing up, even a sip od water would make me sick for hours. The antibiotics made it even worse.
I lost over 15kg in 2 weeks, I legit thought I was going to die. It took almost 2 years before I could eat normally again.
I may be weird but I use both Ark (default archiver in KDE) and 7-zip in wine. The reason is that 7-zip has better compatibility with some file formats but most importantly, Ark can’t extract files with unicode file names from some archive formats (including tar!). This problem has been known for years and affect many other linux archivers, it’s a pain in the ass.
I agree. Coming from the Windows world, systemd felt quite familiar compared to other components in a typical linux system, I always liked it. It doesn’t really follow the unix philosophy though, so it gets a lot of hate.
Cool stuff, now add some physics to those branches :)
Definitely. A lot of kids that used to be called “very lively” back when I was in school are diagnosed with ADHD or similar conditions nowadays even if there’s nothing wrong with them.
Italy.
Cooking, every foreign person I know eats 20x more takeout and fast food than I do.
The first time I heard about programming being obsolete was when I was taught UML in university. That was over almost 15 years ago and it didn’t happen, if anything programmers now also had to know UML, which isn’t all that bad but it definitely didn’t replace anything, it’s just useful for designing and documenting projects.
I also heard from colleagues that in the 80s and 90s people said that SQL was supposed to be used by users directly, making (some) programming obsolete.
Now AI bullshit claims to be making programming obsolete. I won’t hold my breath.
