Makes sense. I’m a librarian and we still use cards from the old card catalog for notes.
I’m a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I’ve had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.
Makes sense. I’m a librarian and we still use cards from the old card catalog for notes.
Come on, I’m counting on you!
It’s from OCHA’s daily brief.
I did math on this part of the report:
10,022 reported fatalities 2550 women 4104 children.
Subtract the children, you get 5918 adult fatalities. (10,022 - 4104=5918)
Edit: the “Data on Casualties” is, like I mentioned, slower to update. There’s a date filter–the fatalities listed are from earlier conflicts in the region, or in Israel or the West Bank.
Take a look at this daily brief put out by OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs). It’s dated 6 November 2023.
Their “Data on Casualties” tracker is more detailed in its breakdown, but is slower to update (as noted on that page).
Edit: So, of 5918 adult fatalities listed, 2550 (43%) were women. It’s not clear to me at first glance if the remaining 57% are men, or if there are some undetermined folks mixed in.
Are you suggesting that
Thanks for the clarification. It’s hard to tell these days and I don’t always have the spoons/mental bandwidth for it.
By “they elected Hamas” you mean maybe 15% of the current population? That’s a broad brush you’re wielding.
(Based on 70% of the population of Gaza being under 30 years old, meaning they’d have been 13 or under in 2006, when the last election was held. And Hamas got ~45% of the popular vote in the 2006 election.)
Congratulations! I’m wicked happy for you, Internet Stranger :) and hope you a smooth recovery.
So their edit was made on kbim but not picked up by sh.itjust.works until after you made your comment? Maybe. I dunno. Lemmy is a bit of a black box to me sometimes.
You didn’t. Your post was edited, 4 hours ago. Their response was 2 hours ago, so they should have seen that edit before they posted. They might be on mobile and only see the “edited” indicator, not the “how long ago” note?
The last elections in Gaza were held in 2006. 70% of people in Gaza are 30 or younger, meaning they would have been 13 or younger during that election. I don’t believe the 2006 election can be held up as proof that the current population of Gaza asked for this government.
I do. I left my pour-over coffee maker at the office, so I make do with instant coffee. It’s… ok, if I drown it in almond milk.
I took it to be them anchoring in their own experiences and trying to use those experiences as a way to help others understand even 1/10 of what the Gazans are going through. Felt like it was coming from a place of support and empathy. I can see your interpretation too, though.
My mobile app (Joey) still works for me. I think it’s because I’m a moderator on a subreddit. I occasionally visit Reddit, but not nearly as much as I used to.
That’s my emotional understanding of the current situation. I supported the invasion of Afghanistan whole-heartedly the night it happened, but I was a child then. 9/11 was upsetting and rockets are exciting. Now, with maturity and hindsight, that invasion was a cruel mistake. I believe this current invasion is also a mistake.
TBF you just described most of capitalism.
I don’t need a gun, but the pawn shop on my commute has some musical instruments in the window which intrigue me. I’m a serial hobby-starter, and prefer gently used hobby tools over new, because used items have less of an environmental impact than new items.

I’m a Southern transplant living in New England for the last couple decades and I’ve never thought of “y’all” as being indicative of right-wingedness. I use it all the time and it doesn’t feel like anyone thinks anything of it.
I grew up with Mrs and Ms pronounced nearly the same, so I get the pronunciation confusion.
My dad used to disable the motherboard speaker because the noises games made back then were more annoying than fun. We eventually got a soundcard, and that was awesome.
