In both cases I think they would deny it.
I don’t have a solution for the 2nd situation (and I don’t think anyone really does), this is more of a social problem. The point I’m making is that in the first scenario there is a clear pattern of denial for those who need help.
In terms of how you differeniate it, my understanding is if the behavior is impacting your life negatively then you would seek help. But I’m not an expert and that’s not a problem we are solving here.

I mean yeah, at this point people are here on Fediverse out of principle, not content. It’s like complaining why there are no scrappy reality dating shows on PBS, it’s missing the point.
My personal observation is that people have been fed up for quite a while, not so much by the Instagram app itself but by Meta’s brand, their untrustworthiness and the general vapid and scammy nature of the hordes of Influencers and “hustlers”. It’s just regular folks aren’t aware of decent alternatives or the alternatives aren’t quite there yet.
Just use Instagram? You can’t engage with Fediverse clone accounts.
Just roll your own lists, that way you know where exactly the info is coming from, less risk of fake news. Kinda like making your own food at home vs eating out!
I like Axios for news, and News Minimalist which uses LLM to de-sensationalize news articles. Ars Technica for tech stuff.

From a sociological and logistical perspective, it’s just not gonna happen. Pretty sure people’s tolerance for radioactive materials anywhere near them is zero. There isn’t any amount of radioactivity / danger that is considered socially acceptable.
