Yeah, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine.

Hey now, AI transformed him into a tool who goes onstage to talk about AI. That’s transformative.
Don’t worry - there’s a documentary about when this happened last time. We can fix it again.
Absolute poetry:
I know you want to be the next Steve Jobs, and this requires you to get on stages and talk about your innovative prowess, but none of this will allow you to pull off a turtle neck, and even if it did, you would need to replace your sweaters with fullplate to survive my onslaught.
Presumably because we let them by continuing to use their products. It’s definitely bullshit though - every time I log into a site I managed my dashboard is littered with notification banners. Most are legit notifications (albeit there should be a proper log for that), but the actual ads for plugins are maddening.
Right? I’m tired of my admin dashboard being a wall of plugin advertisements (especially from plugins I already pay for).
This is an awful story. The woman was in hospice care when she was pronounced dead, so she wakes up in a funeral home only to know she’ll be back there soon. That’s a real psychological nightmare scenario.
If I remember correctly ZFS keeps the whole array running whenever one is active (which is basically always). If I remember, I’ll check my UPS when I get home to see the actual power draw. The storage itself is probably cheaper to run than the main server in the rack - a gen8 HP 360p, which is a bit on the old side and I’d guess not terribly efficient being a 1U piece with many small high-powered fans running constantly.
Electricity here isn’t too expensive though, being public hydro power.
That’s a slight exaggeration. I think it was about 2 years to get close to filling that up. Keep in mind that a chunk of that is unusable due to drive parity.
It really depends on what you’re doing. In my case the soft costs like domains are pretty negligible compared to how much I seem to spend on more hard disks every six months. You might tell yourself, “96 TB of raw storage will last forever,” but it turns out forever is about a year.
Do new hires have to submit a pull request to get in on it? If so, I’m guessing the non-technical staff don’t get to drink a lot of coffee.
This is super cute and wholesome. Considering some of those former students travelled back from out of town just for this event, I bet yesterday was in the running for best day of this teacher’s life. I bet it was also an amazing experience for the former students who attended, many (I’d guess) with their spouses and kids coming along. A real multi-generational reunion of those whose minds were shaped by this undoubtedly amazing person.
What a great example of a teacher building community.
Very good point about the car! Art is obviously more personal, but yeah, the fact is that anything that makes up our personal world has statistically benefited in some way by the acts of bad people.
I not going to stop liking songs or movies or books simply because 20 years or more after they were created the artist gets canceled for saying or doing something stupid.
It’s unfortunate, but if you did that you’d pretty much have to write off a good chunk of classic rock. Too many of those bands had underage girls as groupies, some to pretty extreme degrees. Here’s one article about Zeppelin that covers more ground than just them.
Lately I’ve been having a tough time with the fact that a lot of musicians and actors I’ve really enjoyed have either proven themselves to be truly sketchy people, or have some serious (but not yet proven) allegations against them. I’m not even talking about the classic rockers, but a lot of stuff has come out about current acts over the last few years - Ryan Adams, the dude from Arcade Fire, Marilyn Manson, etc.
These are great suggestions. I’ll add a book to that list: “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Dr. Cialdini. (Not so coincidentally, his doctorate is in social psychology.)
It’s been a few years since I read it, and if I’m remembering correctly it’s oriented toward business people. Regardless, it teaches you what to watch out for and how to mitigate its effects on your own psychology. People use this book everyday to exploit others, so why not learn their tricks?
Assuming you mean a general note-taking app rather than something specific to shopping lists, perhaps this would fit the bill?
I haven’t tried it yet myself, but I’ve been looking to move away from Notion and this looks interesting. It’s billed as open source but I came across this on their alternativeto.net page: “Notice: the backend code will be open-sourced as soon as we’re sure that the backend service meets the security standards.”
I’m not sure if that’s still relevant or not, but am posting it FYI.
That’s really encouraging to hear! I don’t think I’ve ever played Arma multiplayer (other than a bit with my dad) but ages ago I used to play a lot of Battlefield 2 and I recall that community being a mixed bag in terms of cool and toxic people. Maybe that was partly the times as it was a good 15 years ago, though the gaming community even now seems all over the place. My wife and I regularly game with another couple (our own private servers, mostly survival games). They also play Overwatch and have said that community can be pretty awful, especially to women.
Oh, and I know what you mean about Arma combat - it’s punishing. That’s part of why I like those resistance-style game modes. Hit and run is a viable strategy.
Anyway, glad to hear you mostly have good experiences with that community.
I somehow only saw this reply now. It’s funny to meet other Arma players on here being that Lemmy generally seems to be a pretty progressive-leaning community and I don’t necessarily think the Arma community, on average, would be a super compatible demographic. Granted, there’s bound to be some crossover.
Anyway, judging from your comment history I get the vibe you might enjoy mods like overthrow and antistasi. If you’re not familiar, both are open-map game modes where you slowly build up a resistance movement to an oppressive government or occupying force. They’re literally the only way I personally play the game.
The only one I play regularly is Arma 3, and other than the (IIRC) 80s cold war DLC all their maps are technically fake countries. That said, I’m pretty sure they’re all made using real satellite footage so I guess stay away from Greece, Lithuania, Mediterranean France (?), and whatever island in the Pacific Tanoa is based on.
