Around 2 years ago, I got an email from a products team asking me for urgent help extending a program in time to make a sale.

I looked over the program and wrote back sonething along the lines of “this program was written almost a decade ago by an unsupervisered highschool intern. Why TF are we still using it?”.

Of course, I ended up helping them, because that highschool intern was me, and I ended up helping because no one else could figure out what highschool me was thinking.

Java did have a Security Manager that can be used to prevent this sort of thing. The original thinking was that the Java runtime would essentially be an OS, and you could have different applets running within the runtime. This required a permission system where you could confine the permissions of parts of a Java program without confining the entire thing; which led to the Java security manager.

Having said that, the Java Security Manager, while an interesting idea, has never been good. The only place it has ever seen significant use was in webapps, where it earned Java the reputation for being insecure. Nowadays, Java webapps are ancient history due to the success of Javascript.

The security manager was depreciated in Java 17, and I believe removed entirely in Java 21.

The problem is not a lack of food. The problem is a lack of logistics to get the food to the people. And the cause of the problem is not farmers. It is the regions most powerful military activly blocking aid. Soon it will also be because the government of said country successfully lobbied to defund the aid organization with established networks with Gaza.

The solution is simple. Don’t activly block food from Gaza, and food will appear in Gaza. Almost like magic. If magic was the result of decades of hard work in building a new world order after world war 2.

Don’t worry, Israel has a strong law of return. Once the infastructure is rebuilt; everyone with at least 1 Jewish grandparent will be allowed to return to Gaza.

Of course, calling for a right of return for the people who were literally just forced out will be a complete non starter.

Yes and no. A policy of overwhelming force is more effective if your metric is a binary peace/no peace. However, when it fails, it fails catastrophically, and you find yourself in a war that you do not think was anywhere near worth starting.

Both the US and Iran are being very restrained at the moment, and no one wins if that changes to both sides going all out. In fact, from what I can tell, both sides are being dragged into this conflict against their will.

Plus, the US has other concerns. There is still a war going on in Ukraine, where, as far as I can tell, US support is much more vital to US security interests. And there is the evergreen spectre of a war in Taiwan that the US needs to maintain posture on.

Instead, the US started a 20 year long war against the Taliban, resulting in the Taliban still being in power today.

Afghanistan didn’t secede. The US just got bored with it.

How do you think blockades work? The Houthi’s didn’t fire at ships for no reason. They fired at ships for violating the blockade. If they didn’t do that, there would be no blockade.

And is that working? It sounds like their old plan is still running.

The Houthis are not new at this. They have been the target of literally thousands of airstrikes by Saudi Arabia, but have continued to operate.

The US is not new at this either. It has decades of experience loosing to much less technically capable forces fighting on their home turf. If history is anything to go by, this is simply not a fight the US military (or any modern military for that matter) is capable of winning.

Operation Prosperity Guardian is already underway. Unfourtuantly, modern drone technology tilts the scales in favor of the attacker in this sort of situation relative to where it was a decade ago; and commercial shipping companies are not in the bussiness of shipping through active combat zones.

Agree on going with safty razors, but once you are there, you don’t want to cheep out. The one option my local grocery store carries is a $20 that is complete junk. I invested $70 in a Henson safty razor and never looked back. They also have a $250 offering for people who want the benefits of a safty razor without the cost savings.

For blades, I actually splurge and buy the $0.20/piece offering from Feather instead of the $0.10/piece ones that Henson sells. Still cheeper than the $0.80 safty blades the grocery store sells, or the checks app $4.50/piece cartridge blades the store sells?!?

Moral of the story: go cheap, but don’t be afraid of spending a little money to do so.
