1. “sort”: that’s the word for the options of “new”, “scaled”, “active” etc, right?
2. “New” does seem to improve things.
3. @Die4Ever pointed out there’s a “Show Read Posts” option in the settings. I’ve unticked that and will see how it goes.

One thing: I don’t see a “Mark as Read” button.

I might have the wrong terminology: when I say “my main feed”, I don’t mean an RSS feed in a feed reader, I just mean what I see when I go to my instance’s homepage ( https://lemmy.ca/ ) in my web browser.

I’ll keep experimenting and subscribing to more communities and see if it improves over time.

I’m following about 70 communities.

On Pixelfed, I follow only two accounts so far, but I never see repeats.

Confirmed. I just opened a post I’d never opened before, and one comment was highlighted. It had been posted just four minutes earlier, so perhaps it is determined by a time limit.
