Creep is the mechanism you refer to. Yes absolutely scientists can replicate creep in the lab. You too can at home by leaving butter on the counter and watching it bend under its own weight at room temperature after a few days.
At about 1/2 or 2/3 of the melting temp and above, materials start to behave kind of funny.
I’d love a nice freshly baked fingerprint stollen. In Dec at least.
I think gravity and light work the same on psych majors as it does physics and engineering students…
I kid.
So in biology I know e the Euler number is important. It is used in growth equations (from finance to physics as well).
Statistics is fucking huge in every field. That is how you measure uncertainty. Bell curves and the Five Numbers and all that stuff is how you analysis thousands of widgets coming off an assembly line, or measurements in the social sciences field.
It’s not a “conspiracy” but rather it’s capitalism. Yes the employers have almost all the power. Without unions or laws to try to level out the power imbalance, the only solution is to keep getting new skills that will eventually make you valuable (as simply a college degree doesn’t cut it anymore). And yes it’s a race to the bottom.
We already have computers that can determine which sounds to cancel out. That’s pretty cool.
Sound isn’t going to be like a bullet or an electrical storm hitting the grid. I don’t think you can just make a material that blocks out sound when it reaches a certain level and allow it below the threshold. Definitely an interesting theory but I am not sure how it would be designed.
Mars is 1.52 AU from the sun, or 1.52x further than Earth, so the inverse square law says 43% less sun power. But the atmosphere is thinner and a different composition.
To know how the human eye actually operates on Mars, one would have to get a human eye to Mars.
Yeah going to sleep drunk is stupid. If you have one drink while making dinner, one with dinner and one after dinner, and then go to sleep 2+ hours later, almost entirely sober, then this study has no bearing on that.
For me, even if I do binge drink a little later than is prudent, I’ll stay up a bit until I start sobering up. And I definitely feel way better than when I go to bed when my body is still processing a stomach fill of alcohol.
If it’s 1905, inflation would suggest that a dime might have been worth it. I believe this story is in Peru as well, so that’s another layer to how a worldwide audience might not be able to parse the value of the coin.
Edit: an inflation calculator I just consulted said a dime in 1913 is worth about $3.25 today. But then again you can imagine how $3USD might get you further in Peru than NYC today.
It’s common, unfortunately. No one will ever admit liability unless a court makes them. So in negotiations, no one really wants to take it to court so the people usually don’t have the leverage to make them pay big and admit fault. So the company pays a modest amount and then quietly fixes stuff just enough to try and avoid the next lawsuit.
Thanks for not blaming me.
According to Google, a garden path sentence is one that misleads or tricks. Part of speech doesn’t seem to be a definitional feature. Unless someone comes up with a better answer, I think I might be right.
If I understand it correctly, it may be a garden path sentence. The usual construction of a garden path sentence is where a sentence, when read, the part of speech for a word is different than immediately considered.
The old man the boats.
Here it seems when considered a word at a time that the old man… Oh wait “man” is not the subject of the sentence, “Old” is not an adjective.
Probably the parties and their donors would scramble to replace them.
Harris has a leg up as she would be promoted to President and would be the incumbent. But she might not be prepared for a primary. Probably Gavin Newsom, her and a couple people would fight over some key endorsements and donors.
Well Chris Christie and Mike Pence would probably kick themselves as they just dropped out of the race. In a lot of ways, the republican race wouldn’t change much. At least Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis would still be fighting over the voters not waiting for Trump to resurrect three days later.
The really dicy shit happens if the winning candidate dies before inauguration.
What would evidence of free will look like?
I think the only reason there is “debate” is that free will is so intuitive and needed to justify institutions like the church and the current state of the justice system.
If you parse a lay description of free will, it’s clear from a 1980s biology perspective, that free will is an illusion. “I chose to pick up the pen” is how our brain rationalize our actions. A better sentence would be “My brain decided to pick up the pen and it made sense to do so in retrospect and I passively observed this process”.
Fossils preserved within ancient rock may prove that photosynthesis started way earlier than we thought.
Cool stuff, but not really the “origins” of life in the way I was thinking. Cool research on very early life, but not on the origins of all life (in fact, I don’t know if any of my ancestors every photosynthezed…?)
Really, any interpretation of time as a dimension already kind of has this baked in. Where and when aren’t drastically different if time and space are both physical dimensions.
OK thanks for taking a week to completely miss the point again. Like a laughable waste of time.
You quote me saying the US didn’t have nazi Germany occupied, like it’s not relevant to what happened during the war, but then you say the US occupied Germany after the war. Not relevant. Isreal is occupying Gaza before during and after this “war”.
Maybe in February you’ll have a change of heart.
Pictures. Memes. Anarchy.
There’s a few ways communities have signaled that the rules don’t require a thesis for every post.
