If you train AI models then you probably rely on CUDA and you’re really left without any meaningful choice. It also wouldn’t matter if AMD jumped 100% on AI even 5 years ago because CUDA has been so intensely adopted by the industry and AMD would need to do something completely novel and extremely impressive to have any chance of making a meaningful dent in just 5 years time.

As such I don’t really blame you, as I said in my above post as well. I blame the gamers, the people that don’t use CUDA and just play video games, the people complaining about how expensive GPUs have become while still fucking buying nVidia cards. The fact that AMD can deliver a product that costs less at the same performance point (without RT) is pretty impressive given their miniscule volumes compared to nVidia.

Since XeSS can run on AMD cards I feel that point is a bit moot. Further the best Intel can offer (in discrete GPUs) is miles and miles behind AMD even. As for Price / Performance the 6600 XT is neck and neck with the ARC 770 at basically the same price, depending on card and the day. Where I’m at the 6600 XT is generally the cheaper one. And that’s not even talking about the 7600 XT which demolishes the ARC 770 at also the same price point…

Nothing, rumor wise even, is indicating Intel will bring anything to the table to challenge 4070 or up.

To sum it up in my opinion it really is only the ARC 380 that I’ve been impressed by. Very cheap card with excellent server performance for stuff like Jellyfin. But for gaming? No AMD is by far the better option from a value perspective.

As for laptops it’s not that AMD doesn’t make the chips, the laptop makers know consumers want the Nvidia part.

Jesus, they really are one of the most egregiously lock-in focused and monopolistic companies around. It saddens me deeply that consumers (gamers) just don’t give a flying fuck about this and continues to pay a premium for Nvidia cards. 90% market dominance in gaming and probably at least that in GPGPU workloads.

All the while AMD tries to sell their cards on supporting / creating open standards like Freesync, FSR and Vulkan but because they don’t have CUDA (since it’s proprietary) they virtually can’t be bought by prosumers that want to do some GPGPU stuff as a hobby and gamers buy Nvidia for brand recognition, Ray tracing which they are stronger in (but I argue isn’t really all that outside a few notable exceptions like Alan Wake 2) and DLSS being ahead of FSR. But look at non-RT $/FPS and AMD wins easy at all price points and they don’t shaft the people who bought their cards by not giving them the new version of DLSS like Nvidia do. It’s just sad.

Vote with your wallet they scream, while everyone votes for the alternative that openly wants to squeeze every penny out of them because they are slightly better…

Yes, but I’m pointing out how the cable is part of it in ways that wasn’t true for many older standards. So if I plug a non-data cable into a data USB-c port (say a digital camera with AAA / LR6 batteries) into a computers USB-C port then nothing happens. Same if I try to charge the camera by plugging it into a USB-c wall plug. Or if try to plug my phone into the USB-c charging port on my laptop, no matter the cable since neither phone nor laptop has the function to charge other devices. Etc etc.

I work IT and while I don’t work directly in support anymore I still get people at the office coming to me for support because I used to and we’ve outsourced it now. So I know first hand how confusing USB-C is to average users.

More like do nothing. Sure if everyone follows spec nothing will break from using the wrong usb-c cable in the wrong usb-c port but it’s common to end in a situation were literally nothing happens.

As a sales guy myself by training and tech sales by profession that sounds very much like there are some very fucked incentive structures at play that need to be addressed. If they’re only monitored on number of deals closed then you get shit like that trying to meet targets and get the bonus that is extremely standard in the sales profession and account for a large share of the yearly salary. If they’re measured on profitability then you wouldn’t see that, they’d drop stingy clients themselves for wasting their time. Another solution I’ve seen is having a larger bonus for customer satisfaction and renewals / growing the contract but that only really works out if your sales also doubles as account managers.

Yeah my take away there is if that’s the tech level of your sales guys you need to have a tech sales role and a strict ban on the pure sales people even attempting talking tech. Sales should be talking business and business needs that the solution can adress.

I haven’t seen that in stores or online but also haven’t looked. Should be possible to make i feel with the evolution of bioplastics.

An alternative is paper lanterns. I’ve seen versions that at least claim they’re safe in that they can’t start a forest fire. With the Chinese New Year coming up they should be easy to find.

Well, feel like I could quite easily become a very famous stage magician a la “The Prestige” which would help make me rich while letting me keep the pocket dimension thing hidden in plain sight so to speak.

But my mind, as always, races to the limits more so than the possibilities. What would happen if I bring in more stuff than would fit? Say I bring in a decimeter cubed of concrete over and over until I no longer fit inside the cube if I’m allowed the concrete with me in? What if teleport in while driving? Does the car come with even though it doesn’t fit? And if I return to the spot I entered does that mean I’ll plopp out on the highway while my car is wrecked a ways down the road or inside my mangled car? What if the space i entered from is occupied or otherwise lethal?

What if I teleport in while under water? The void i leave in such an instantaneous fashion would behave quite interestingly if I did it at great depth.

Sure, but I take great offense at the hyperbole in the headline and core of the article. I hate when media takes pity on the rich kid with problems and act like they’re the world’s biggest. When the poor kid has it worse but no one gives a shit.

Being cynical and very utilitarian that doesn’t have to be a bad thing for the economy. They had a “surplus” in terms of high unemployment for uneducated men which this war has “fixed” and that means lessening the burden on government finances.

Which country do you think is the most depressing? As its defined in the article, i.e. the nation causing the most depression? My bet is every single nation above Korea is vastly more depressing and people only care about and think Korea is exceptional because it is much closer to our western Nations.

And even then Korea doesn’t even break the top 10 in suicide per capita. Having more diagnosed depression is hardly a worthwhile stat when that depends more on the availability of doctors and psychologist to make the diagnosis.
