The problem with github isn’t really a problem. It’s just accessible enough to borderline tech people who want a one click solution to a problem. They can find it, but using it requires more skill than they have. It’s a code repository, not an app store. The most useful things I find on github aren’t from some massive app developer, they’re from some guy who happened to have the same problem as me. Rather than screaming at that guy for an executable, level up. Learn something.

I feel like all gaming mice are terrible, except for maybe a few. I usually buy more office/corporate centered mice because they’re usually more ergonomic and robust. I love the Logitech MX Vertical for work, and the MX Ergo for the couch. Both have been going strong for years. But the most intense game I play is Civ V, so your mileage may vary.

Are the ads to fuel future shows, or to recoup losses from the abhorrent money pit that is Rings of Power?

For real. It’s been at least top 3, and arguably top 2, for scifi my entire life.

Star Trek has been at the top for nearly 60 years. In the US at least, you can turn over a rock anywhere and find a Star Trek fan.

Uh, last I checked, Britannia rules the waves, not the Falklands. Checkmate, Margaret.

But even that was kind of cheating. I think May had the Mercedes 300D, which is probably the most reliable car ever made, and Hammond had an Opel that had already survived 50 years there. The only one who really struggled was Clarkson in the Lancia, which makes sense.

No, because the market has become so fragmented, no streaming services are profitable, so there’s no show on one that will ever last. Average shows last on TV channels because of ads. A medium performing TV show can last forever on TV with ads. A medium performing TV show on a streaming service gets canceled after a couple seasons to transition resources to a new show. They’re looking for that next big flashy thing to draw subscriptions.

In the current broken system, the only options are to continually churn shows, or push ads on streaming services. Both are happening.

So, if you pirate a TV show today, you aren’t killing it, and you aren’t part of the problem. Paying for the service won’t keep the show around, and not paying for it won’t kill it either. The show is already dead, you’re just not forking over your hard earned cash for a bite at its dead corpse.

To the room full of millionaires out there who think I’ll spend $14.99/month indefinitely on their shitty platform to watch a better than average Star Trek show:

I spent a decade with streaming services, because for 10 years, it was the best, easiest way to watch what you wanted to watch. I paid a fair price, and studios got a fair cut.

When every studio decided they wanted a bigger cut by extracting more out of my pocket, they intensionally fragmented the market and made me pay an unfair price for an inferior product. They haven’t innovated, done more, or produced better TV or movies, they just demand more for the same.

So, I pirate.

If the story is true, Tim coaches the new hires and on boards them into the environment. Tim serves as a sound board for the senior techs, since he’s privy to the larger departmental scope. He is the point of contact for the team.

The manager telling the story needs to be fired. Tim is doing his job.

The manager here only serves to add a layer between Tim and management that is ultimately unnecessary, as the story proves.

Fire the manager. Promote Tim.

This is so true. My dad taught be to be responsible with alcohol, and he did it without throwing a rager and then begging a bunch of teens to be responsible and practice temperence.

We just had a beer and watched some kung fu movies and talked about it. My kids will get the same treatment.

I feel like everyone knows of some dumb parent because they threw a rager, because “If they’re going to drink, they should do it in a safe space,” and then got the book thrown at them over an underage DUI case. I’d argue that a party is an inherently unsafe space for kids to learn about alcohol. There’s too much going on, too much peer pressure, and too much alcohol to be yourself and learn your limit.

True, because it’s also a giant Ponzi scheme. We pick up new debt today to pay off debt from yesterday, and we hope expanding GDP and inflation will always offset the difference.

I’d guess it’s purely to avoid litigation from Twitter. If they didn’t poach Twitter employees or IP, and instead based some of their platform on open source, fediverse stuff, that’s not a multiyear lawsuit with hundreds of millions in lawyer fees.

There’s a lot of anxiety because it’s topical. Nearly ever user here I’d wager, myself included, just flipped to Lemmy as we watched Reddit break the camel’s back.

I think what most people don’t quite realize though is why this is happening. Reddit isn’t just gearing up for an IPO, they’re transitioning to the model spearheaded by Apple: you access their ecosystem exclusively through their platform.

Every large tech company is trying to play this game. They are developing hardware that gives sole access to their platform which in turn controls the experience and distribution of their content. Apple is best at it and massively profitable, but everyone is trying it. Most already have the software>>>content pipeline locked down, it’s the hardware they can’t get right.

That being said, Meta understands that the easiest way to grow Threads is to flip Instagram and Facebook users, not Mastadon users. The easiest way to keep users is not some defederation long con, it’s to get your grandma and your spouse on their platform. The goal for Meta is to reach a critical mass tipping point, where as a society, most people agree you just have to have an account through them to be part of a larger conversation. They aren’t trying to kill federalized platforms directly, because it’s easier to skip that step and try to make every platform that isn’t their own second tier at best. It’s in their best interest to ignore everyone else and just on-board as much of their Instagram and Facebook base as possible in the next year.

It’s because a lot of conservatives believe in a really screwed up, masochistic, bastardized version of Christianity that prioritizes vengeance, punishment, and anger. It ignores the love, kindness, acceptance, and mercy (ie the actual teachings of Jesus) that make society work well.

So, when kids come home with these new ideas about kindness and acceptance, because being kind to a gay classmate is a great way to demonstrate the love real Christianity teaches and society values, the parents freak out. They push to ban books, fire teachers, and move their kids to private schools that more match their hate filled, divisive worldview. Education polluted their child with abnormal, liberal indoctrination, like being kind, empathetic, and accepting of others.

I an attempt to steer their children back to their core values of hate and divisiveness, they lash out. Any pushback the parents feel in response becomes persecution, because of course “the world” would disagree with them. They’re the TRUE Christians afterall. So they isolate in ecochambers, and they get more hateful. Any difference of opinion is met with derision and just simply validates their position. And despite being the TRUE Christians, or REAL conservatives, they become less Christian and less conservative every day, instead just becoming these weird, evil, empty husks of people with no real values or ideals outside of hate.
