Am I right in thinking that the article’s main complaint, namely that the means testing excludes those too poor to retire, is wrong? You can still claim pension credit if you’re on a low income.

Firstly, I reckon it’s debatable whether having an active monarchy is a net gain financially (how much could we charge for admission to Buckingham Palace?).

But, for me at least, it’s simply a matter of principle. I believe we are all born equal, and that nobody should be given special treatment due to something as trivial as their ancestry. Having a monarchy flies directly in the face of many values I think we as a nation value deeply.

Also they have a lot of land that their great great … Grandad nicked from the Saxons and I wouldn’t mind that being nationalised.

I imagine the main costs involved are party funds for campaigning, but they probably see it as a proxy for the main event, so hardly money wasted. Even if it were, its not public money.

It’s still “income” in the sense that it’s money comeing in to his account. Only difference is that he didn’t even need to do anything to earn it.

As totally justified as it seems to be in this case, I find the points raised by lawyers about this concerning. Ultimately this is a case of the legislature overruling the judiciary with none of the process that the latter would typically require to make sure it is done properly.

Of course, this is such a gross miscarriage of justice that letting the convictions stand probably did more to undermine faith in the system. But I really wish this could have been sorted out without this breach of separation of powers.

This seems like a false dichotomy. Maxwell’s equations don’t say anything about where the charge comes from, only how the electromagnetic field behaves if charge (be it electric or magnetic) is present.

And if you’re talking about the standard model, well we’ve known that that’s incomplete since its inception, but I’m not aware of any argument that says anything beyond the standard model must have either monopole or a fundamentally different conception of magnetic dipoles.
