I saw it when I was probably 4 or 5? I had recurring nightmares for YEARS. Like, well into my mid teens. I’m pretty sure I even had one or two as an adult. I’m recovered now and I’ve watched the movie without incident, but I don’t like it and I don’t really want to willingly watch it again.
I was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid and convinced my parents to let me see it in the theater when I was 6. I was so fucking terrified at the opening scene I pretended I needed to pee so I could step out for a minute.
I did come back and loved the movie though, so I guess it wasn’t that bad.
I think colloquially people have begun expanding use of the word to include anything where features or product are removed but the price stays the same.
Maybe there’s a better word for that, but I understand the parallel.
Don’t focus only on reddit users. That unnecessarily narrows the scope of the issue.
Lemmy has significant barriers to joining that other sites or services do not have. And then once people manage to join there are basic usability issues with simple things like finding communities.
Until these core issues are solved it feels pointless to try to target users from a specific site.
Which of course is stupid, because USPS is actually great and provides a much better and more reliable service than any private competitor even in its current underfunded state.
I agree but I’ll take it a step further. I’ve been in IT for almost 20 years. I never took a math class after high school (age 18). I took math up through calc 2 in high school.
I’ve never used a single lick of anything beyond basic math for my work. None. And I don’t know anyone else who has either over the course of 4 different employers and working with hundreds of people.
In my opinion it’s the logical thinking and the process of problem solving that are the parts of math that translate to IT. Doing proofs, understanding all the reasons why something is the way that it is. So in that regard sure, math is important. But I feel like OP is implying that actually knowing how to do complex math problems is important for a career in IT, and it really isn’t.

No, the postal service costs money. It’s a service. It doesn’t aim to make a profit. It costs money, and we are in turn rendered a service that is useful.

If you are asking a hypothetical question comparing the amount of oil in a spill and its damage to the environment vs simply using that oil normally, I think the oil spill wins in a landslide for being the most damaging.
Do this, but also cover the whole operation with a towel. Not quite stealth maybe but it’s about the best you can do.
If a headline can be interpreted in multiple ways because the word choice makes it vague it is the headline that is the problem, not the reader.
This is solved by choosing more precise language. “Cop who fatally shot unarmed black man” is just as concise but is also unambiguous.
Let’s not let our desire to make fun of Americans get in the way of doing things properly.

The closest example of similar humor I can think of is in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, during the trial of trying to figure out if the woman is a witch. The scientist is there to settle it for the peons, and uses “logic” to solve the problem of whether she is a witch. Ultimately they decide that if she weighs the same as a duck, she must be made of wood, which floats on water, and therefore a witch. It’s a series of nonsensical correlations misconstrued as fact, and it’s funny because we the viewers understand the absurdity of it.
I think it’s more a bit of wordplay than a joke exactly, but that your friend said is in the same vein. What on earth makes cars go? Well it can’t be windows, can it? Houses have windows and they don’t go at all! Whether you find that funny is obviously subjective but I also think delivery and conversational context are very important for humor like this.
Pretty difficult to imagine doing this honestly. Do I retain the memories of what I’m reversing? Or is it just a rewind? Because if I don’t retain the memories then it’s a bit pointless, but if I do I think I’d have a hard time reliving things. For instance I would never go back far enough to erase my children, but my youngest was born 2 weeks before COVID. Regardless of any get rich quick scheme I could think of, I am really not certain I’d want to knowingly live through that again.
You seem like you know about pawpaws. I’ve always been curious. I’m in southern Wisconsin, are they this far north or do I need to travel somewhere?
I used to drink a shitload of soda.
Then after college I was living at home with my folks, two hours away from my fiancee. I had nothing better to do so I decided to focus on my health. Took 6 months, did a lot of p90x, went almost entirely cold turkey on processed foods, added sugars, and alcohol.
I ended up losing over 60lbs, almost all of which I have gained back for various reasons. But one thing that stuck is I cannot handle non-diet soda anymore. It makes me feel physically sick to drink more than a couple ounces. I will occasionally drink a diet soda, but even those are few and far between.
It’s like I rewired something inside of me and I just can’t deal with those sugar bombs anymore. I’m sure part of it may also just be me getting older.
Anyway the point of the story is, there is hope! It takes some willpower, but if I could do it, you can too!
No not perfect, certainly. And cars are definitely complex, and recalls are a normal and expected component of car ownership for most people. Watch for them, get them rectified.
To be clear though, recalls are sort of outside what we are talking about when we are talking about reliable and long lasting cars. A recall is a known issue that the company addresses. It doesn’t mean the car won’t last.
Toyota and Honda, while they have the normal minor issues any car might have, are absolutely head and shoulders over other makers when it comes to their cars simply lasting longer with less maintenance.
Consumer reports is good for identifying which older models or vehicle have stood the test of time. I’m not sure it’s as useful for newer vehicles since it’s very hard to assess longevity of new models before there is data.
Lol my wife and I absolutely used to go to 24 hour grocery stores at like midnight on weekends back before we had kids. We both love cooking so it was fun to slowly peruse the aisles looking for random things we hadn’t noticed before and coming up with ways to use them.
Lame I guess, but neither of us likes bars that much and we couldn’t afford to go out that often anyway.

I think people’s impression of things is skewed because overall cars are much more reliable than they used to be. When I was a kid a car over 10 years old was something you expected to have issues, and certainly wanted to avoid buying. That’s not the case these days, and the huge numbers of functional older cars on the roads make us not realize just how many old vehicles are out there because they’re normalized.
My car is 15 years old, my wife’s is 9. They’re both perfectly fine and they don’t feel old to us.

I think it was the cornfield chasing parts? I also recall just being super creeped out by E.T. himself. The way he made sounds, the way his fingers move, etc.
The biohazard stuff you’re talking about scared me, but I think just the sounds E.T. was making, not the guys in suits specifically.
