  • I was a total film buff. I watched every special, bought limited editions, even imports from Japan because the cut was different. I went to festivals, studied film techniques, watched 3-4 movies a week, old and new. It’s all gone. I don’t know, it was kinda pushed away by other hobbies and stopped being as interesting to me. Which is a bit sad because there are still amazing and obscure movies coming out. Now I watch 1, maybe 2 a week and I sometimes have to push myself to do that.

  • I used to collect movies on DVD/Bluray but kinda fell out of love with it thanks to streaming, taking up room and being annoying when moving places. They are not worth anything so I don’t want to go through the trouble of selling, so I’m throwing away the cases and put the discs in CD organizers to make them more compact. Most of the labels got sunbleached anyways.

It’s a bit sad. I mean some films are not and will never be available on streaming but overall this became just a nuisance.

  • It’s a hobby. Some people like automating things. Some people are overdoing it. And some like to have a central control on their phone for everything. It’s nerd heaven. I am some people, but not overly excessive. And I want everything to still be usable by guests.

I personally have a few smart devices mostly because I keep forgetting to do things. Window sensors and thermostats that work together. When I open the windows, they turn down. The windows remind me to close them after 10 minutes. When I leave home, the heating turns down.

Light automations are for when you want to be lazy, like me. When I’m away or when the sun comes up, light turn off. When I arrive, hallway light turns on. When the sun goes down, some lights in the living room turn on. I don’t have any motion sensor stuff because it doesn’t work the way I want (we all know the horrors of motion controlled bathroom lights at the office). The only reasonable sensor I could imagine is actual presence detection, which just recently became a thing but I will wait at least until there exists one by a privacy focused company like Eve.

I would like to get something for my curtains but it’s all getting a bit too expensive.

The trick is to not use any smart devices that run in the cloud. Not only because of privacy but also because you don’t want to be freezing or sit in the dark just because the internet is out or the whole company shuts down. This is what people are always joking about over smart homes, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Keep everything in your own network. You can still access it from outside through the hub but that’s optional.

  • I had this same situation in 2022 with my 16 year old rescue (don’t be intimidated by that age, some dogs can just live longer). He already had cystitis two times. Hip issues, like most shepherds get (he was a mixed breed though), pain in all his legs, had a hard time standing up and walking. And he walked very slowly. Could not wag his tail anymore. He went deaf but we both handled that part pretty well. He didn’t eat much anymore and did not seem to enjoy anything. Writing all this down now I think, Wow that was a lot, but all these issues grew over time and only the worst ones appeared very late and it got exponentially worse. Some days it was clearly time to let him go. Other days it got better and I changed my mind again. That went on for many weeks, months.

My vet was always very supportive. She never said I should do it, because it had to be my decision, but she made sure to comfort me and say that it’s ok if I decide to do it and don’t have to feel guilty. Finally when I was at the vet for a checkup and meds I decided to do it. She agreed and explained the process to me and we went through with it. I was crying through it all but it was ok.

Talk to your vet. They’ve seen so many people go through this. I’d say if you feel like it might be time there is probably a good reason for it. You know your dog well and you know when she’s not the same anymore and it’s not just a phase.

I wish we could ask our pets but we can only make that decision for them.

I got unconscious on marijuana two times. Not much, smoked a few times before without any consequences. Went to the doctor, he tested my heartbeat (I think), which was fine, and said „well just don’t smoke marijuana“. Which I ended up doing because I was scared. But I would have liked to know what the fuck was going on with me because that can’t be normal. The doctor did not care.
