There is no context whatsoever In which the very loaded and insulting word “weirdo” is acceptable. Just because you have trained your family members to accept insults as information, that doesn’t mean it’s OK.

Phrases like this or “stop being a weirdo” are aggressive, insulting, and only work for you to feel superior to the OP.

Even something like “you have a lot of unsolved issues, you should see a therapist before attempting to befriend your ex”, though equally blunt, is less deliberately insulting.

Work is not high school. A few instances of you getting your phone and saying “Do you mind repeating that while I record you, so I can discuss with HR how you’re creating a hostile environment?” should at least curb some of those attempts at bullying.

Did you really want advice? Are you willing to accept it even if it contradicts some deeply ingrained notions you may have? Are you willing to compromise somewhat?

“Just”? Tact is very infrequent in certain locations. I’d even say that common decency is.

We can easily assume the reason.

Specially if the person asking is from a certain countries where such a question is almost invariably racist.

Because it’s none of their business and it’s a tad racist, and they know racism is bad but they don’t want to look as bad people.

Many of these issues can be also be related to the fact that the citizens of powerful countries are entitled assholes who vote their countries to continue the exploitation of other countries.

Your membership in one of those citizen groups is, of course, completely conjectural, but I have a strong opinion about it.
