Everyone expects 20% no matter what. Especially those stylists who are working as independent contractors for a large company like Great Clips. Prices went up kind of fast in 2020, so I asked my wife to learn how to cut my hair during the lockdown, and I haven’t gone back to a professional since.

I’m between wives at the moment but I picked up a clipper and have been cutting my own for the past year or so. Otherwise yes 20%.

That’s brave! I would never cut my own hair. Well, I guess I would shave my own head. But I’d still be nervous about missing something.

After a while you get pretty good at it. I just run over it with the buzzer multiple times and run my finger tips over the back of my head a few times looking for longer strips I missed. Also if you’re out in the win you’ll feel those longer hairs you missed waggling around. I trim once a month or so but if you do it more often you’ll be likely to catch it the next time you buzz. I understand some people just don’t like the buzzed look, but I wear hats most of the time anyway and couldn’t imagine spending 20$+ to have my hair done.

Bro, you obviously do not look good like that. People can tell you cut your own hair. You do not spend enough time doing it for it to look nice.

            I trim once a month

Yeah, they all know. Even barbers trade haircuts with other barbers. You can afford $20 once every 3 weeks.

Respect yourself. A good haircut (and working out) is like the cheapest way to look nice.

I started shaving my head just because I hated getting haircuts. I had a few times where I missed a couple spots but now it’s second nature and is faster than shaving my face.

Every once in a while, a post from a service employee would surface on r/popular on Reddit, and you’d get a glimpse of how they really feel about tips and people who tip badly or don’t tip. They absolutely will retaliate against people they know don’t tip up to their expectations, but they will never share their expectations with their customers.

Granted, this is a slice of the total population of service workers who are complaining on a public forum. Still, would you risk your hair, or your food, or your time to someone who decides you’re not keeping up your end of the social contract? Not me! If I go to a place regularly, I tip even if the service is bad, because I won’t take the chance of being retaliated against.

        It sucks.

It is an American issue. Many restaurants here pay servers just over $2 per hour with the expectation that the rest will be made up in tips. During the pandemic we (people who were still getting a paycheck) started tipping generously to help people who were picking up gig work because their regular job was closed and also to thank the places who found ways to safely stay open. When the pandemic ‘ended’ the over-tipping and expectation of tips didn’t. Now it’s kind of out of control IMO.

At a restaurant, if it isn’t made up in tips, the restaurant has to pay them the difference

That’s the genius of “gig” work. There aren’t any laws saying they have to pay them because they’re considered contractors

The restaurant is supposed to pay the difference. You’re likely to be accused of not reporting cash tips or made to feel like shit because you can’t earn __$/hr.

My son just got one that was $10, with an extra $1 for a 7-Up; I tipped $6.

My old barber (RIP) charged $15 for each of us and I tipped $10 for both together.

I went to my wife’s salon most recently, was charged $29 (nothing close to any listed price, but lower than the listed prices, soooo) and tipped ~$6 (I used the 20% button on the terminal). I was very happy with the cut and will probably go back. I’m due in a week or two, actually, I should make the appointment now.

My last haircut + beard trim was about $40 CAD, and I tipped 20%.

Now I tend to go to nicer places, so the price is a bit higher than Magicuts or something. My hair is also a pain to deal with so I generally tip well.

Haircut and beard trim for $57 CAD, and they don’t take tips unless you physically hand them cash, so I usually don’t tip.

Swede reporting in: I think my last haircut was ca 450 SEK (~42USD), it’s not customary to tip for haircuts here, in fact it would be quite weird.

$50 CAD (including 20% tip), been going to the same stylist for years! Used to be cheaper but inflation / experience warrants the price that she charges. For my last haircut of the year (around Christmas) I’ll tip $50 on top of the $40 cut.

I pay 40€ for the hair cut and 70€ for hair cut and beard trimming combo. Since those are premium prices here in Austria I rarely give a tip on top of that and it’s not that common here anyways.

€8-10 in Spain, no tip because I’m not American. $2.50 in Cambodia. Otherwise whatever I see, but I don’t get it cut often.
